What is Ground Frost Removal?

During the winter months in Calgary, winter temperatures can become extremely cold. This causes the soil near the surface of the ground to freeze. Frozen soil is very hard and prevents many piling or excavation activities. However, ground frost removal employs the use of a portable ground heater that can effectively thaw the ground frost and allow normal excavation or construction activities to continue.

What is a portable Ground Heater?

In order to overcome the difficulties presented by frozen ground during cold-weather construction, specialized mobile ground heaters are available. This innovative ground thawing equipment utilizes a heating system that operates similarly to that found in radiant floors but is adapted for portable outdoor use. The primary purpose of the mobile glycol ground heater is to thaw frozen ground efficiently. By using mobile ground heaters, construction projects can continue despite the ground being frozen due to unfavorable winter weather.

Ground thawing equipment features a network of 5/8″ hoses that are strategically placed over areas of frozen ground or curing concrete. These hoses serve as conduits for a heated propylene glycol solution to circulate. To enhance its effectiveness, the ground is covered with a polyvapor barrier and the hoses with insulating blankets. This creates an enclosure that directs heat into the ground.

Mobile Glycol Ground Heater?

Ground thawing equipment features a network of 5/8″ hoses that are strategically placed over areas of frozen ground or curing concrete. These hoses serve as conduits for a heated propylene glycol solution to circulate. To enhance its effectiveness, the ground is covered with a polyvapor barrier and the hoses with insulating blankets. This creates an enclosure that directs heat into the ground.

The heating system incorporates dual coil heaters responsible for elevating the temperature of the propylene glycol solution within a reservoir to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. A pump then circulates the heated glycol through the network of hoses, facilitating the thawing process. The glycol solution is subsequently returned to the reservoir for reheating, forming a continuous cycle.

The Mobile Glycol Ground Heater is a versatile solution that enables construction projects to overcome the challenges of frozen ground, allowing for the efficient thawing of up to one foot of ground per day. This technology is instrumental in promoting the curing of concrete in cold climates and maintaining optimal surface temperatures for construction activities. Its mobility makes it a valuable asset in diverse construction scenarios where the impact of winter conditions is a critical factor in project timelines and success.
